James Edward Lucas was born 29 Nov 1874, in Montevallo, Shelby County, Alabama, to parents Jasper Newton and Martha (Holsomback) Lucas. He went by the name Ed Lucas.
Ed Lucas and Roxie Davis married 28 Dec 1898, in Shelby County, Alabama. They had six children: John Robert (1898), Lexie V. (1900), Lee Dennis (1902), Frank George (1905), Joseph F. (1908), and Shular (1909).
The 1900 census record shows Ed & Roxie with their first child, John R., living in Shelby County, Alabama. He was a miner.
The 1910 census record shows the family living in Six Mile Precinct, Bibb County, Alabama. Ed & Roxie had six children: Robert J., Lexie V., Jessie L., George F., Joseph F., and Shular M. Ed continued to work as a coal miner.
Edd Lucus' registered for the World War I draft 12 Sep 1918. He stated he was 44 years old, born 29 Sep 1874. He lived in Brookside, Jefferson County, Alabama. His nearest relative was Mrs. John Green in Robuck, Shelby County, Alabama. Edd was employed as a coal miner by Brookside Pratt Company. He was of medium height, slender build, with gray eyes and brown hair. (He didn't serve in the military.)
Ed and his sons, John Robert and Frank, came north in 1920/21 when the mines flooded in the Piper, Alabama area. They moved to Johnston City, Illinois, and then soon after to Stirtz, Illinois. [*DP]
On 06 Jul 1923, Ed married Emma Pearl Litton. They had two children: Stanley Edward (1925) and Dorothy Faye (1928).
James Edward Lucas applied for a Social Security number on 05 Dec 1936. Here he stated he was 62 years old, born 29 Nov 1874, in Montevallo, Alabama, to parents Newt and Martha (Holsomback) Lucas. He lived at 1204 N. Jefferson, Johnston City, Illinois. He was employed by Franco Mining Corporation. The application was signed - Ed Lucas.
Ed suffered from cancer of the liver for several months before his death 19 May 1941, in Johnston City, Williamson County, Illinois. The death certificate states he was born 28 Sep 1873, to parents Newton and Martha (Haltenbeck) Lucas, and he lived 67 years, 7 months, and 21 days. His wife, Pearl, was 38 years old. Ellis Lucas was the informant. Ed was buried in the Herrin Cemetery.
