Wlada LANGNER

1908 - 1938

Wladyslava LANGNER was born 07 Jul 1908 in Cicero, Cook County, Illinois. She was a daughter of John and Maryanna (MICHALAK) LANGNER.

"Aunt Lottie was slow to learn. I don't believe she attended school. She probably didn't get any help and was considered not able to be educated. She couldn't be considered retarded for they sent her all over to stores by herself, even over that 52nd Street bridge, especially around Christmas. All the stores were small, and they always gave some Christmas present. Aunt Stella sent her all over to get these gifts. I know for a fact that she went over the bridge to a butcher because I was there when she went and when she returned. If she was retarded, she could never have done this. She was never institutionalized."  [*DLS]

"I asked if Aunt Lottie was born that way. Mom said, "No." While Grandma was working, Aunt Elsie and Aunt Stella were watching her. They had her outside in the buggy (they didn't have strollers then), and they decided to push the buggy back and forth, sort of playing catch with the buggy. It tipped over, and Aunt Lottie fell out. She must have hit her head. At that time, I guess money was short and nothing was done."  [*DLS]

"Aunt Stella's husband, Frank, was very unkind to my grandmother and Aunt Lottie. When I was young, I would never understand my Grandmother saying that she prayed for Wlada to die before she did. I thought how could a mother pray for her child to die. Now that I'm a mother, I understand she didn't want to leave this person, her child, behind to be abused or pushed around. Aunt Lottie was childlike. You could carry on a conversation with her, but I gues she grew up among adults who treated her as a child. I do believe if it were today that she had this accident, her life would have been different."  [*DLS]

"My Dad had a few confrontations with Uncle Frank [Remblos] about Wlada. They would start playing cards (Mom, Dad, Uncle Frank, and Aunt Stella). If they ran out of beer, Uncle Frank wanted to send Wlada to the tavern, and this was in the evening. Dad didn't like him doing this, and they did have a few words, no fighting, just verbally, but to him Grandma and Wlada were there to serve him. He was mean to them."  [*DLS]

Lottie LANGNER died 20 Mar 1938 in Cicero, Cook County, Illinois. Wlada was laid to rest in Resurrection Cemetery, Justice, Cook County, Illinois.
