Mary SMOTHERS became the wife of Charles Rice, 07 Feb 1850, in Franklin County, Illinois. It is not yet clear whether this was Charles Brooks Rice, because a census record from Sep 1850 shows a single 18-year-old Chas. B. Rice living with parents Steph & Anna.

1855 Marriage Record
Charles B. Rice obtained a license to marry Mary Jane FLEMMINGS 19 Feb, and wed 21 Feb 1855, in Franklin County, Illinois.

Charles B. Rice purchased 40 acres for 13 cents an acre from a Federal Sale in Franklin County, IL (Section 8, Township 07S, Meridian 3, part SWSW, Range 03E) on 09 Apr 1855. There is an 1860 Census record that for a Charles B., age 26, & Mary, age 19, Rice living in Benton, Franklin County, Township 7S, Range 3S, with children  Ellen, age 3, Jesse, age 11 months, plus James L Rice, age 31.

Charles B. Rice enlisted, August 12, 1862, at Benton, Illinois, as a Private in Company A, 110th Regiment, Illinois Infantry. He was 31 years old, 6 feet tall, with dark hair, black eyes, and dark complexion. He was a married farmer, living in Franklin County, Illinois. Civil War muster roll documents available include: 1862 Sep, Oct, Nov-Dec, 1863 Jan-FebApr (The Company A muster roll 10 Apr 1863 indicates he was a Sgt.) May-Jun (At the consolidation of the regiment he was transferred to Company C, 110th Consolidated, Illinois Infantry.) Jul-Aug, Sep-Oct, 1864 Mar-Apr, May-Jun, Jul-Aug, Sep-Oct, Nov-Dec (20 Dec 1864 he was detailed to QM Dept 2, Division 14.) 1865 Jan-Feb, Mar-Apr, Jun 08 He mustered out at Washington, D. C., June 8, 1865.

Charles B. and Mary J. may have had four children together - Ellen Ardine (1857), Jesse O (1859), Charles Monroe (1866), and Millard L (1869), before Mary Jane died in Aug 1870.

Margaret Clementine Rice married Charles Brooks Rice 25 Dec 1870. They each brought children from their previous marriages into their union. Their family continued to grow. The couple had twins, Frances L. and William Franklin in 1871; and Rhoda in 1874.

In Franklin County, Charles Brooks Rice married Mary L. "Mollie" STRINGER on 24 Feb 1876. Her maiden name was Mollie BENNETT. Her previous marriages may have been to David W. Duncan, James Joplin, and James L. Stringer. Brooks and Mollie had one daughter, Myrtle, born 13 Nov 1876.

Charles Brooks Rice, aged 45 years, died 09 Jan 1877, in Franklin County, Illinois. He was laid to rest in Knight Cemetery, Buckner, Franklin County, Illinois.

Probate Record for Charles B. Rice: S. A. Fleming, being duly sworn deposes and says, that Charles B. Rice late of the County of Franklin and State of Illinois, is dead, and that he died on or about the 9th day of January A.D. 1877 and that his Personal Estate will probably amount to $600.00 that said Charles B. Rice left at the time of his decease, Mary L. Rice his widow, and Jesse O., Charles, Millard, Franklin, Frances; Rhoda Rice; Ellen Ardine Sullins his children.
