Patricia Mae LUCAS

1927 - 1992

Patricia Mae LUCAS was born 27 Apr 1927, at home in Johnston City, Williamson County, Illinois, firstborn of Frank and Verbal (RICE) LUCAS.

The family moved to Maywood, Cook County, Illinois, before her second birthday.

"There were four children in the family: Pat, Terry, Roger, and Janet." [*DWH]

"Pat loved to play school. She would be the teacher, and her brother, Roger, was the student."  [*VRL]

While out walking alone, when 12 years old, she was molested by a couple teenage boys.

Pat graduated from Proviso High School 06 Jun 1945.

During World War II, she worked at Fannie Mae Candy Company.

Pat worked in Orthopedics at Hines Memorial Hospital in Maywood, Cook County, Illinois, during 1945, 1949, and 1951.

Patricia Mae LUCAS and Stanley Irvin HASS were married 25 Aug 1947 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

The couple, lived in Los Angeles, California, during 1948. In California, Pat worked at the L. A. Regional Office of the Veteran's Hospital. Pat suffered her first mental breakdown seven months after her marriage.

After moving back to Illinois, they had two children, Catherine (1950) and David (1953).

They lived at 125 Oak Street, Elgin, Kane County, Illinois, in 1953.

"Her favorite barber named Roland had a shop a few blocks from home. Afterwards we would go for flavored phosphates at Filbert Drugs kitty corner from the barber shop. Mom had the same hairdo the entire time I knew her; like the picture above but shorter and not as poofy." [*DWH]

"The family moved into the house they built on Robin Lane in 1959, across the street from her parents, Frank and Verbal LUCAS, in the Northwoods subdivision of West Chicago, DuPage County, Illinois." [*DWH]

"Mom suffered mental breakdowns for as long as I can remember. Her depressions would keep her in bed constantly along with drinking heavily. I became a bartender making gin and squirts or bourbons. Mom chain smoked Viceroy cigarettes. We kids had to play outside so as not to disturb her." [*DWH]

"On some weekends Dad would load us up in the car to visit Mom at the hospital. Being young children we could not go in so we sat in the car and then when leaving we were prompted to stand next to the car and wave at some window in a building for a few minutes. She was hospitalized in Michael Reece, Chicago, once and Forrest Hospital, DesPlaines, multiple times, as I remember." [*DWH]

"Besides her mental issues she also came down with cancer and had a hysterectomy when I was around 10. I later found out she received the popular electro-shock therapy but don’t know how many times. She never would answer any of my questions about her mental issues. My father was never specific either." [*DWH]

"Mom could cook some dishes well but mostly food was bland. My favorites would be her sweet chilli with beans, half burger buns spread with mustardy ground beef, fried chicken, spaghetti and pork roast. She used to make me a pineapple upside-down cake for my birthday with extra caramel. My sister and I were self sufficient at home but my grandmother was just across the street if needed. Sometimes there would be a few years between breakdowns. When she saw her doctor in Chicago we would go to Marshall Fields to get sponge candy. If Christmas time we would walk around the Loop and see all the mechanized decorated store windows." [*DWH]

"Mom was our cub scout den mother for a while. She used to drive the kids to school before we got a school bus. To make enough room one would sit forward, another back and so on. I remember she had an old Buick that didn’t have a working reverse. Mom would let me stay home to watch all the space launches." [*DWH]

"For years she enjoyed oil painting." [*DWH]

Pat did exceptional needlework, primarily knitting and needlepointing. She created her own designs and participated in shows.

For a few years, around 1975, she worked part-time at a yarn craft store. Pat was an active member of a handwork club and held positions on the board for several years.

Stan and Pat moved to 14415 N. 20th Place, Phoenix, Arizona, in December of 1990.

Pat collapsed suddenly as she rose from the dinner table 02 Sep 1992. She was taken by paramedics to the hospital where she remained on life support for 24 hours (a legal requirement).

Patricia Mae HASS, age 65, died 03 Sep 1992 at John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix, Pima County, Arizona, of cardiac failure due to brain stem failure due to subarachnoid hemorrhage. From Shadow Mountain Mortuary, 2350 E. Greenway Road, Phoenix, her body went to Mount Emblem Cemetery, Elmhurst, Du Page County, Illinois for burial. The informant for the death certificate information was her surviving husband, Stanley I. HASS, of 14415 N. 20th Place, Phoenix.
